About Emma Mary Drexel

Philanthropist. Emma was the second wife of Francis Anthony Drexel and the daughter of Michael Bouvier and Louise C. Vernou. With her marriage to Drexel in 1860, she became the stepmother of Elizabeth and Katharine. Together Emma and Drexel had a daughter Louise Bouvier in 1863. In 1870, the Drexels bought a farm in Torresdale, a section of Philadelphia; it became their country home, and was called St. Michael. Three afternoons a week, St. Michael welcomed anyone in need, and with her daughters, she distributed food and other aid. Emma began a Sunday school for neighborhood children; Elizabeth and Katharine taught lessons. Emma died of cancer.
