Her father's will and various legal records name her Emaliza, Emeliza, or Emmaliza, but in her will, she calls herself Emma Eliza Braswell. Her grave marker likewise reads Emma Eliza (see photo).

Braswell, Emma Eliza of Edgecombe Co., will date 3 Feb 1897, date recorded 21 Sept. 1900; “being of sound mind and memory” .. Item to my grandson, Lewis Braswell Knight, $100; Item grandson Robert Vernon Knight $50; Item to my daughter, Mrs. A. Dora Gay, two beds, bedsteads and mattresses and the sum of $150, but if said Dora should die without heirs the beds and furniture shall go to my grand nieces, Emma and (Harriet) Knight; Item to my grandson Bennie Knight, one bed, bed stead and mattress and $50; Item to my daughter Fannie Knight, one packing truck (and other personal items) & $150; Item son Robert Braswell one bed, bed stead and mattress but in case he should die without heirs they to go to my daughter Mrs. Fannie Knight; Item to my son, V.B. Knight one side board; Item to my daughter in law (Mrs) Alice Knight one domestic sewing machine; Item son in law (Louis) B. Knight the farm bell; Item grand nieces Emma Knight and Fannie Knight, daughter of V. B. and Alice Knight, the sum of $25 each; Item The balance of my estate to be sold and proceeds used to pay my debts and balance shall be equally divided among my daughters Mrs. Fannie Knight and Mrs. A. Dora Gay and my sons Robert J. Braswell, and Vernon B. Knight, should they all be living at the time of my death, but if one or more should die without children, then his or her share is to lapse but if they should die leaving children the children shall receive their parents share; I appoint Dempsey B. Batts my executor, signed Emma Eliza Braswell, wit. Joe A. Knight, G.R. Grimes. Letters Testamentary dated 21 Sept. 1900, state value of property at $850, executors are L.B. Knight and V.B. Knight, Emma Knight and Frances Knight, daughters of V.B. Knight, Benjamin Savage, Lela Savage and Joe Savage, with L.B. Knight as guardian and Lon Weathersbee.
