About Emma Amelia Johnson

GEDCOM Note

Reverand Thomas Gainford was minister of the Mariners Church in Sydney for 13 years. A death notice was put in the Evening News newspaper, Sydney on Wednesday 5 March 1884. He died on this day.

Auntie Vera said he accompanied Emma on the ship to Australia in 1873. Emma was only 17 when she came to Australia. She came on her own.

Septicaemia to Childbirth: Emma died of this. It is a bacterial infection contracted by women during childbirth or miscarriage. It is a severe infection spread via the bloodstream. The majority of childbed cases from 1600's to late 1800's were caused by the doctors not washing their hands with an antiseptic solution before a delivery. Can be caused by contaminated medical equipment. Now we have antibiotics to clear infections. Also more hygienic conditions. She may have had a baby girl who died. See Emma's death certificate. This could be a mistake and should have been one boy deceased. She had one boy who died before her (Ernest Lorenzo Johnson).
