Birth: Mar. 23, 1872 Omaha Douglas County Nebraska, USA Death: Jul. 3, 1904 Cheyenne County Kansas, USA

Emma Powell, wife of W.J. Powell, is Called to the Great Beyond. A True Woman, a Kind Neighbor, an Indulgent Mother, a devoted Wife, Answers the Summons and Leaves a Large Family to Mourn her Departure. The community was profoundly shocked Sunday morning by the sad intelligence flashed over the telephone wire the Mrs. W.J. Powell of Jaqua had died at 5 o'clock that morning. Death was caused by heart failure resulting from an acute attack of albumenuria, from which she had suffered for several weeks. Emma Spaulding was born at Omaha, Nebraska, March 23, 1872, and died at her home near Jaqua, Kansas, July 3, 1904, at the early age of 32 years, 3 months, and ten days. She leaves an aged mother, six orphaned children, a widowed husband, a brother and a large circle of friends to mourn her untimely departure. Death at all times is sad, but when the young mother-one whom we knew and loved in life-is taken away from a housefull of small children, words fail to express our grief and we stand dumb in the presenc of God's dispensation. The deceased came to Cheyenne county with her parents in 1885 and settled on a homestead and has lived in the immediate neighborhood ever since. Here she met and won the tall Virginian who has been her protector and companion for more than fifteen years and was by him led to the altar June 26, 1889. To this union seven children were born, two girls and five boys, six of whom, two being infants ten days old, survive, the eldest son having preceded him mother to the spirit world. Mrs. Powell was a woman of exceptional qualities; a true friend, a good neighbor, a fond mother and a devoted wife. The writer enjoyed an intimate and cordial acquaintance with her, and it causes him deep pain to be call upon to write her obituary. Impressive funeral services were held over the remains at the family home, conducted by Rev I.S Hall of St. Francis, after which loving hands tenderly laid the remains to rest in the Jaqua cemetery, there to await the trumpet which shall arouse the quick and the dead. The funeral was largely attended, friends from far and near coming in to pay the last sad tribute of respect to the dead, and say a word of consolation to the living. May she rest in peace. Card of Thanks. We hereby return our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the many friends and neighbors who so generously assisted us during the recent illness, and at the funeral of our beloved wife and mother. W.J. Powell and family
