Enoch Coombs, Jr.

Enoch COMBS, Sr., with wife Barbary and son, Enoch, Jr., came to Maryland by 1664, and probably by 1663, to either Calvert County or Talbot County, and probably from Lancaster County, Virginia (adjacent to Old Rappa), where an Enoch COOME is recorded in 1662.

Enoch, Jr. is believed to be the same who married (probably a second marriage?) Sarah SPRIGG, widow of John PEARCE and daughter of Thomas and Katherine GRAVES Sprigg (Thomas married 2nd Elinor NUTHALL, daughter of John, Sr.).

Enoch Combs (Enoch Combs1) died BEF 8 MAR 1725/26 in Prince George's County, MD. He married Sarah Sprigg, daughter of Thomas Sprigg and Catherine Graves. She was born ABT 1658 in Northampton, Prince George's, MD, and died BEF 15 DEC 1736 in Prince George's County, MD.

• Enoch Coombes patented Largoe, which lyeth on the north side of southwest branch of the Patuxent River, before it came into possession of Alexander Beall. Enoch had a daughter named Elizabeth Coombes. Her godmother was Joane Lawson, Reade, Mounten, Tyler, Beall, wife of John Beall, immigrant of 1670. Joane left Elizabeth a legacy in her will of 1675.

Nov. 1726, Dr. John Haswell, who also pre-deceased her, dying testate, bef. Apr. 11, 1750, pr. Geo's Co., and by whom she had no issue.   • (II.) John Peerce (or, Pearce), III, may have been a couple of years younger than his sister, and therefore probably b. C1679, Calvert Co., Md.; d. intestate, 1766, Pr. Geo's Co., Md. [Ref: Mareen Duvall of Middle Plantation, by Newman, p. 106.] m. (1) probably C1701, but judging from the ages of his known children, we think he must have been twice married, with most or all of the children by the (2) marriage, presumably to Mary (Evans) dau. of John & Elizabeth Evans. Her father's will, Cotton, op. cit., vol. 2, p. 216. She signed as a witness to the 1727 deed to him from his mother, supra. (NOTE: the phraseology of the deed of gift from John's grandfather, Thomas Sprigg, Sr., to John's mother and himself, supra, in Mar., 1700-01, indicated that John was not then married, I.E., " ... for his feuture advantage & preferment in Marriage ..."- - but was bout to be, i.e., " ... John Pearce ye Only Sone of ye Said Sarah Pearce & his wife for and fureing her Naturall life or the Longer Liver ..."]

Enoch Coombes immigrated to the Americas with his father and namesake, Enoch Coombes.

In 1689 Calvert County, Maryland. "Enock Comes" signed the Calvert County Protestant Petition, with John Nuthall and in 1698 in St. Mary's County's petition. This was possibly due to change in county boundaries, rather than a physical move.

By 1720, Enoch Combs married Sarah Sprigg Pearce, the daughter of Thomas Sprigg by his first wife, Katherine Graves (widow of Capt. William Roper). Thomas Sprigg married (2) Elinor, daughter of John Nuthall by Jul 1668.

Know ye that I Sarah Cooms of Prince George's County in the province of Maryland Spinster for and in consideration of the natural affection which I have & bear unto my beloved Son John Peerce of the County & province afd Gent as also for diverse other good causes & consideracons me hereunto moving after the expiration of natural life have given granted bargained & confirmed unto the said John Peerce & his heirs forever one negroe man named or cald [called] Smith & dow now give grant and confirm unto the said Peerce nine head of neat Cattle that formerly belonged to my decesed husband Enoch Cooms as all my part of a Crop of Corn that is now depending between James Magruder & me & Sundry other goods & chattels which I now give the said Peerce possession of with the said cattle & corn
