Notes

Records show that William Berry is the son of Henry Berry of Old Rappahannock County and married Margaret Doughty, daughter of Enoch Doughty (1639-1677) who was the son of Rev. Francis Doughty and wife Bridgett. Enoch was apparently born shortly after his parents arrived from England to Massachusetts.


1663 "Deed of gift: I, Enoch Doughty, have delivered unto Joye Oneale, my brother Heugh Oneale's daughter, on black heifer; 20 Nov 1663; /s/ Enoch Doughty; wit. Samuel Clarke, Thomas Branso (mark)." [1]

Notes for Enoch Doughty and Ann

1661 "Court held 25th Sep 1661 in Charles County. ... Elenor Empson, Plt., Richard Watson, Def.; plaintiff claims Watson defamed petitioner by forbidding the banns of matrimony without cause against a poor distressed widow; Mr. Enoch Doughty, age ca 22 years, swore he saw a note sent by defendent to his father, Francis Doughtie, to forbid banns between plaintiff and any other person as she was his wife before God; defendent being a blind man and disclaiming any interest in her, being forced to trust others in writing; plaintiff non-suited."[1]

1667 Enoch Doughty was granted 500 acres on the north side of Rappahannock River, above Nanzemone Towne, Virginia. Dated November 8.[3]

1675 Enoch Doughty was granted 4763 acres on Rappahannock on the south side of the river: Beg.g &c. to a branch called Tuckquake Swamp. Dated June 15. [4]

1675/76 Enoch Doughty wrote his will on February 27. [5] Enoch mentions in a memorandum that some of the tobacco that his brother has carried to England is from Enoch's own crop.

1677 The will of Enoch Doughty was proved on May 9 in Lancaster County, Virginia. [6]

1722 Land formerly granted to Enoch Dowdy in King and Queen Counties, Virginia, was sold on July 18. [7]

  • In the Name of God Amen being in Good Health & perfect memory I make this my last will & Testam't first I bequeath my Soule unto God & my Body to ye ground, hoping of a Joyfull Resurrection in ye Lord, that Worldly Estate, that God hath bestowed on me, after my Debts paid,
  • I give unto my Children & their heires and as my Desire is that they may goe out of this Country,
  • I doe Impower my Overseers Francis Daughty & James Philips to put to Sale & Sell All my lands & Goods & Chattles for money good for my Children & their Heires wch: being performed wth:out Giving in Security in Virginia that they will be faithfull & true in performance of this & to my children
  • & further I do Impower Either or both of these my good Overseers to performe this my last Will & Testam't.
