About Ensign Nathaniel Chapin, Jr.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for CONNECTICUT with the rank of Ensign. DAR Ancestor # A020792

Nathaniel Chapin was born on 31 December 1738 to Nathaniel Chapin (1711-1745) and Sarah Abbe (1718-1785) in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. He married Sibyl Terry (1740-1775) on 10 December 1761 in Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut. They had seven children together; most of whom survived childhood. Sibyl passed away on 26 June 1775 in the early months of the war. Nathaniel married Zerviah Parsons (1740-1822) shortly after Sibyl’s death in 1775. Nathaniel and Zerviah had no children together. During the American Revolutionary War, Chapin served as Ensign in Col. Comfort Sage’s Regiment; Wadsworth’s Brigade of the Connecticut State Levies. Chapin was made Ensign of 2d Company, 3d Battalion, by vote of the assembly. Ensign Chapin’s military career began on 6 June 1776. His battalion was sent to the aid of General George Washington at New York in 1776. Ensign Chapin was caught in the retreat from Long Island in 1776 and he subsequently fought in the Battle of White Plains on Chatterton Hill on 28 October 1776. He left the service upon the completion of his six-month term in December 1776. Ensign Chapin survived the war and passed away on 12 February 1831, in Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut at the age of 92. Ensign Nathaniel Chapin was buried at Enfield Street Cemetery in Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut.
