About Ephraim Goss
First of Goss clan to permanently settle in Indiana Territory. Ephraim and various of his Goss brothers and/or uncles crossed the Cumberland Gap to visit, hunt, scout for future homesteads or just for adventure as early as 1804. However, Ephraim and Anne Workman Goss and their young family accompanied by 3 slaves (Aunt Patsy, John & unknown*), and various livestock and utilizing 2 six horse primitive wagons were the first to permanently move from their Rowan County, NC enclave. In a few years most of Ephraim's generation had moved into Indiana. Some stayed and others moved again further West.
- On 18 April 1815 "freedom papers" were filed by Ephraim Goss for John in Washington County, Indiana after 4 years of indentured service. Aunt Patsy, the family nurse, remained with the family and is buried with them in the Goss Cemetary, Gosport, IN. Nothing is known of the other former male slave.
