One of the Founding Fathers of Athol, Massachusetts. Moved with his wife Martha Scott, d.1775, from Hadley, Mass. They had 8 children. His youngest son Solomon moved and settled in Guilford,Vt.

His wife Martha Scott was the daughter of Joseph Scott and Lydia Leonard Scott of Hatfield,MA.

He was the son of Jonathan Smith and Abigail Kellogg Smith of Hadley.

Children: Martha Smith Dexter, Caleb Smith, Rhoda Smith Leonard(wife of Moses Leonard), Stephen Smith, Lydia Smith Drury, Hepsibah Smith, Lucy Smith Oliver, and Solomon Smith.
