About Erchembaldus II, Mayor of the Palace of Neustria

Erchambaldus (Erchenaud) was Mayor of the Palaces of Neustria (641-657/8) and Burgundy (642-657/8). He was murdered 657/8, and succeeded in both offices by Ébroïn. He might have been a son of Ego of Alsace and Gerberge of Burgundy and Franconia, but see discussion below.

According to Fredegar, he was a relative of Beretrudis, mother of Dagobert I ("Erchynoaldus . . . consanguineus . . . de genetricis Dagoberti"). [Fredegar, Chronicle (about 660).] The exact relationship is unknown.

Settipani suggests Beretrudis was daughter of Richomer of Burgundy and his wife Garitrudis, and Erchenaud was son of Beretrudis' sister Gerberge (Settipani (1993), 95)

Evans calls him a relative of Dagobert I through his mother (apparently understanding Fredegar to mean that the relationship was through Erchinoald's mother rather than through Dagobert's mother). If so, Levillain considers it likely that Erchinoald was a son of Garnier, major domus, by Berthe, daughter of Chlothar II by Bertetrudis.

During the 7th century, the office of Mayor of the Palace developed into the true power behind the throne in Austrasia, the northeastern portion of the Kingdom of the Franks under the Merovingian dynasty. The Major Domo held and wielded the real and effective power to make decisions affecting the Kingdom, while in the mid to late Merovingian period, kings had been reduced to performing merely ceremonial functions, which made them little more than nominal kings or figureheads.
