A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Eric S. Tachau.
With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Eric S. Tachau,
and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.
WHEREAS, Eric S. Tachau, a native of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky,
traversed these earthly bounds on November 23, 2002; and
WHEREAS, Eric S. Tachau was the loving son of the late Jean Brandeis Tachau
and Charles G. Tachau; he was the loving brother of Charles B. Tachau and Jean T. Haas,
both of Louisville; he was the devoted husband of 43 years to the late Mary K. Bonsteel
Tachau; he was the loving father of two daughters, Katherine Scott and her husband
John of Iowa City, Iowa, and Susan Anderson and her husband Mark of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, and a son, David Tachau and his wife Susannah of Louisville; he was the
proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Michael, Julia, and Carrie Anderson, and Anna
and William Tachau; and he was the loving uncle of eight nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Eric S. Tachau attended Oberlin College and graduated from the
University of Louisville School of Law in 1977; and
WHEREAS, Eric S. Tachau served his country with honor and distinction in the
United States Marine Corps during World II in the Pacific Theater; and
WHEREAS, Eric S. Tachau was an esteemed member of the Louisville and
Jefferson County community, where he was a chartered property and casualty
underwriter for 42 years, working for the family-owned Louisville Fire and Marine
Insurance Company and other local agencies before becoming an independent insurance
consultant; he led the fight for the passage of a no-fault automobile insurance law; and he
oversaw the creation and operation of the Louisville Area Governmental Insurance Trust,
saving taxpayers money by reducing insurance premiums; and
WHEREAS, Eric S. Tachau will best be remembered for his astute leadership in

the spearheading of meaningful causes for the betterment of society, and contributing
a great deal to the enhancement of the quality of life in this Commonwealth; in the
fight for racial justice, he was instrumental in organizing a massive march on Frankfort
in 1964 that helped lead to the passage of Kentucky's Civil Rights Act; he was a
passionate child welfare activist, and was appointed to commissions that investigated
the Commonwealth's juvenile justice system; he served on the board of the American
Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky, Court Appointed Child Advocates, the Family Place,
Community Coordinated Child Care, the Housing Authority of Louisville, and the
Funeral and Memorial Society; and
WHEREAS, the passing of Eric S. Tachau has left a void that cannot be filled, and
he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of
Kentucky:
Section 1.
bereavement and loss upon the passing of Eric S. Tachau, and extend to his family and
many friends their most heartfelt sympathy.
Section 2. The passion, dedication, intelligence, and social consciousness Eric S.
Tachau brought to this Commonwealth will never be forgotten.
