Her name is an Americanized translation of "Erin go Brea", which means Ireland the Beautiful, but later came to symbolize "Ireland Forever" in the hearts of expatriates.

Erin never married, but it is believed she struck out on her own when reaching adulthood, as she is not noted in her father's household after 1860. At age 57, she was found as a single woman living with her widowed half sister (Azula Mehegan Norfleet in Tarboro, whose home is shown here) and her brother, Robert Mehegan, who was working as a florist.
