About Ermina May Clark

GEDCOM Note

Erminia Mary Wheelock was born 1 March 1867 in Mount Pleasant, Sanpete, Utah Territory to Cyrus Hubbard and Mary Ann Dallin Wheelock.

Her father was born on 28 February 1813 in Henderson, Jefferson, New York. He was baptized into the Church on 1 September 1839 at the age of 26. He received his endowments on 3 January 1846 in the Nauvoo Temple, Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois at the age of 32.

He led the Cyrus H. Wheelock Company at age 40,departing with 439 individuals and 52 wagons departing on 1June 1853 from the outfitting post at Keokuk, Iowa. The company also included 7 individuals from a California Company which was traveling with them. They crossed the Missouri River on 11 July 1853. They stopped on Sundays to hold meetings and rest. There were many hardships—storms, mud, wind and dust; rivers to ford and bridges to build. Several pioneers died and were buried by the wayside; wagons broke down and oxen were lost; but the little band was encouraged by faith and a dream and at last they arrived at Salt Lake City on 11 October 1853,at 8:00 P.M. The journey had taken almost three months.

Her mother, Mary Ann came to the Utah Territory with the Abraham O. Smoot Company in 1852. Her father Tobias was 46; Mary Ann was 21; Catherine was 11; Eliza was 9; and Edwin was 7. They departed on 1 June 1852 with 256 individuals and 33 wagons in the company which began its journey from Kansas City, Missouri.

From the journal of Isaac Brockbank: “We had rather a rough voyage, calms succeeding storms and were eight weeks and two days in arriving at New Orleans where we transferred all our luggage to the Steamer and following up the Mississippi River in one week, we arrived at St.Louis. Here we stayed two days and took the steamer St. Ange for Kansas City where we arrived in three days from that time. On our way up the river, we stopped a short time at Atchison to see some of the sufferers by the Steamer Saluda who had been blown up by the boiler of the steamer exploding while at the Levee here. There were a number of the Saints on this vessel who were among the unfortunates.

This was the first company that had traveled over the sea under the auspices of the Perpetual Emigration Fund Co. And on their arrival here, they had to be taken care of and sheltered. We arrived in Salt Lake City on the 4th of September, 1852 being six and three-quarter months on the trip from Liverpool to this place. Incoming through the Emigration Canyon and on first taking a view of the city, our hearts were filled with gratitude to God that we had been enable to complete our journey though we had lost many from our number since leaving the shores of Old England. This being the first company that had arrived direct from Europe under the auspices of the Perpetual Emigration Fund Co., considerable interest was taken by the Saints of the City in visiting the company on their arrival on Union Square.”

Her parents had seven children, Erminia Mary being the sixth child born to them. They had first settled in Lehi, then Springville and finally Mount Pleasant, Sanpete, Utah Territory. Erminia was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 1 March 1875 at the age of eight. She married Joseph Orrin Clark on 20 December 1883 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Territory at the age of 16.

Joseph was born 1 July 1861 in Mount Pleasant, Sanpete, Utah to Orrin Smitth and Sarah Elizabeth Gilson Clark. He was baptized into the Church on 20 August 1874 at the age of 13. He was 22 years old when they married.

His mother came to the Utah Territory with the James C. Snow Company in 1852. She was 11 years old. They departed on July 1852 with 250 individuals and about 55 wagons which began its journey from the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs). They arrived in the Utah Territory on 9 October 1852. It is not known what family she came with.

His grandfather came with an Unknown Company in 1851. Joseph Chandler Clark was 52, his wife Phylinda was 48 and his father Orrin was 18.
