Ernest Edward Taylor

He worked on locomotives, milking machines, cars and bridges.

Ernest was born in 1884 in England. He emigrated to New Zealand on the "Ruahine". It departed London, UK on Jun 27 1895 and arrived in Wellington, NZ on 2 Jan 1896. Saloon Class. (National Archives, SS 1/462 No 11). AKA Ernesto Eduardo Taylor.

After leaving New Zealand in adulthood and arriving in South America he worked on engineering projects such as bridges, often in remote places. In Buenos Aries, Argentina he met Sara and married her in 1911. Their first child Rosa was born in Salto, Uruguay. The family of three soon moved to New Zealand but in between they lived in such places as Córdoba Province, Argentina. Ernest was often travelling away from wife and child for work prior to them moving to New Zealand.

Ernest and Sara's family residence in New Zealand was first in Russell where they started living in a house in Chapel St (see photo in attached “media”) after building it. There was a relatively short stint in Stratford (his electoral record in 1928 had been in Bay of Islands) and then the final move was to Whangarei. There it was first 6 Raumanga Valley Rd for many years, moving out probably soon after World War II. Then after a short period in a second, their final one, for many years was 67 Maunu Rd (address no longer exists).

Family have copies of a certificate recording him passing an examination for a "First-class Engine-driver's Certificate of Competency for Stationary (other than Winding-) Engines" in New Zealand on Feb 16 1908.

His right middle finger was amputated after it became infected from a cut acquired while drain-digging for the government during The Great Depression. He was buried in Maunu Cemetery, Whangarei on Jun 21 1955 - Forest Lawn Block Thirteen Plot 461.
