"Arnolfus…rex" granted property "in curtem Uuizunburc" to the church at Eichstätt with the consent of "comitis Ernusti" by charter dated 8 Dec 889[117]. Graf im Sualafeld. Emperor Arnulf informed the church of Eichstätt of a judgment relating to property "in pago Suualafelda in comitatu Ernusti…in locis Appenberg, Prunnon, Hachilinga et Ursesheim" by charter dated 1 May 899[118]. King Ludwig IV "das Kind" confirmed the privileges of Kloster St Gallen by charter dated 24 Jun 903 in which "comites…Ernust…" is listed among "fidelium nostrum"[119]. The necrology of Regensburg St Emmeran records the death "V Id Jun" of "Ernest com" and "III Id Nov" of "Ernist com hic sepultus"[120]. King Konrad I granted property "in pago Ibfigeuue et in comitatu Ernusti comitis sitas…in locis Leimbah, Steinaha et Thiefbach" to the bishop of Freising at the request of "Erchangarii et Heinrici comitum" by charter dated 8 Aug 912[122]. Konrad I King of Germany confirmed an exchange of property "in pago Sualaueldeen in comitatu Ernusti comitis ad Altheim et Papenheim, Pinezwanga et Tetenheim, Vuimeresheim" between Kloster St Emmeram and "hominem…Etih…cum filio suo Helmperto" by charter dated 24 May 914[123].

Bei der Teilung des Reiches im Jahr 839 wurde der Sualafeldgau nicht mehr zu Baiern gezählt.[7] Um 854 wird ein Graf Ernst I. vom Nordgau erwähnt, vielleicht auch Graf im Sualafeld. Er fiel 908 gegen die Ungarn. Ihm folgte Ernst II.,[8] dem wiederum Ernst III., Ernst IV., Ernst V., Hartwig Graf im Sualafeld sowie Guntpold Graf im Sualafeld folgten.[9] In einer Urkunde aus dem Jahre 996 wird ein Adelhard als Gaugraf genannt.[10] Was Ernst II. 1007 in Beziehung zu den späteren Grafen von Hirschberg setzt, ist neben dem gleichen Namen die Tatsache, dass er im Besitz des Gutes Dollnstein im Sualafeldgau war, ein Besitz, der im 12. Jahrhundert sich in den Händen der Hirschberger befand.[11]
