Birth certificate gives name as Ernst Max Hoppe. Came to South Africa with his father Carl Ernst Hoppe approximately between 1893-1896. He was still a German national during WWI and was interned in 1914, paroled, re-interned 1916 and again paroled. Documents in National Archives are:- BNS 1/8/13 650 0000; BNS 1/8/112 4112 1914-1919; CES 63 ES 70/1121/14 1914-1918; GG 664 9/90/13; 1914-1915. He is referred to as E. Hoppe or Ernst Hoppe or Ernest Hoppe. Death certificate and death notice give name as Max Ernst Hoppe.

Death notice TAB MHG 3752/60. Dates 17.5.1963 H.T.S. & 10.6.1963 RMC appear thereon? Name given as Max Ernst Hoppe as well as on death certificate. He died in Warmbad also known as Warmbaths.
