Biography

A marriage license was granted on 4 January 1565 to "Jasper Cholmeley, of Lincoln's Inn, Gent, and Margaret Hounde, of St. Martin's, Ludgate, Spinster." (Ref: Allegations for Marriage Licenses below)

Jasper Cholmeley, Esq., of Worcestershire, J.P., was bequeathed the Highgate property of Sir Roger Cholmeley (died 1565). Jasper had been Sir Roger's clerk.

On 1 Feb 1582, John Martin and his wife Margery surrendered to Jasper Cholmeley and his wife Margaret a tenement and garden in Highgate, late in the tenure of Robert Dickens, deceased, and then of Richard Goatley, carpenter, "between the tenement of widow Sell on the south, and the garden of Jasper Cholmeley, gentleman, on the north, with a way along the pale of Jasper Cholmeley near the tenement, by and across 15 acres of land of Edward Stafford, esquire (held in right of his wife), to the spring of Pond Field, part of the said 15 acres, called the Conduit Head, four feet wide, with the right to take water to the said tenement in leaden pipes." Jasper is described in the will of Sir Roger Cholmeley as his servant (i.e. clerk), and Sir Roger bequeathed to him the manor of Renters of Hendon and other lands. (Ref: Survey of London, Vol. XVII)

Jasper was age 48 when he died on 31 Oct 1586. In his will, he mentions a tenement which he purchased of John Martyn "next my orchard."

Notes

Sir Roger Cholmeley, formerly Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench, is the historical personage whose name is best known in Highgate. He founded the "Free Grammar School of Sir Roger Cholmeley, knight" in 1565, and was buried at St. Martin's, Ludgate Hill, on 2nd July in the same year. ... Jasper Cholmeley, esquire, of Worcestershire, J.P., and Quorum of Middlesex, Clerk of the Writs, to whom Sir Roger appears to have bequeathed his Highgate property, and who died on 31st October, 1586, aged 48, mentions in his will (ref. 10) a tenement which he purchased of John Martyn "next my orchard" (see p. 90). If this means next the orchard attached to his residence, it is fairly certain that he lived in the house containing 15 hearths, occupied in 1665 by Major Gunstone, represented to-day by Fairseat.
