Roland,,,,, i'm not trying to throw any wrenches but I don't think Robert was the son of this particular line, How ever I dont have proof either way yes or no , and I also dont think Esther was the daughter of Robert and Winnie, again no proof either way. It's kinda early here but I'll spit some things out off the top of my head., I looked into Robert the son of James and Elizebeth Jack and thru a lot of dates and wills the Robert they had was not the right age to be Robert who married Winnie., Also I think and again my opinion that Esther was the daughter of Charles and Jane Clark., and if I'm not mistaken Charles was the son of the said James. Reason being the birth date mainly of Esther. I've seen a ton of birth dates of her and a bunch of gedcom ( other peoples ) and 90% or more had her listed as daughter of said Charles.

Also the Middlesboro article if I remember correctly had Esther mentioned and this Article had mentioned of the Pa. Kilgore's and she was said daughter of Charles but I cant remember if It had Jane mentioned or not... If I wake up I'll try and think of some more stuff I found out and look over some files.

Wish I had proof..... cousin Tim

1B) - Not proof by any means but while Lewis and Esther did have a son named Robert, they had no children named Charles or Jane. Just a comment.... Rene <NaiThom@aol.com>

2) - Kinship of Esther Kilgore.........more from cousin Tim

3) - Older Esther Kilgore stuff -

3A) - Esther (Easter) Kilgore, who married Lewis Green, Jr. well known

Rev. War veteran, was a member of the Kilgore family which moved from

Chester County, PA to Orange County, NC about 1740. They had ten

children.

3B) - Quoting from Warren Dale Essary, 1333 South Sunset, Kaysville,

Utah 84037, Phone (801) 547-1477: "I only have the Kilgores back to a

James, dob abt. 1635 in Ireland. ..........I have her (Ester) as the daughter of Charles Kilgore, dob abt. 1703 in Pennsylvania (note: According to Wayne C. Perkins (see "D" below), NOTE: MORE RECENT INFORMATION CONFIRMS THAT WINNIE CLAYTON WAS THE WIFE OF ROBERT KILGORE, JR. - NOT THE WIFE OF HIS BROTHER CHARLES; and that Esther/Ester/Easter Kilgore was the daughter of said Robert Kilgore, Jr. and Winnie Clayton. Some of the family moved south before or during the war of 1774. Charles was the son of John Kilgore, dob abt. 1660 in Ireland. John had three (3) sons that I know of; James W., dob abt. 1701, Charles (1703) and Samuel, dob abt. 1705."

3C) - Quoting from the 24 May 1962 edition of the Middleboro (KY) Daily News, in an article by Rev. Emerson Miller: "The lineage of the Kilgore family, members of which moved from Chester County, PA, to Orange County, NC about 1740, has been traced back in a direct line to 1347 in Scotland. They owned large tracts of land in Caswell County, as did Lewis Burwell, James and Zachariah Green, suggesting that the Greens may have been grandsons of Lewis Burwell Green, head of a prominent Glouschester County, VA family which was (there) in 1720..... The Greens settled in Washington County, VA in 1773, when it was still part of Botetourte County, and deeds reveal land conveyances with members of the Kilgore family, formerly of Caswell County, NC."

Note: The same 24 May 1962 article speculates: "Esther (or Easter) Kilgore was probably the daughter of Robert Kilgore, Sr. (note: More recent information indicates that Ester/Easter Kilgore was the daughter of Robert Kilgore, Jr., rather than Sr.). It also states that James Green, brother of Lewis Green, Jr., was by common tradition a great hunter and a dead rifle shot, feared by the Indians. He married Jean (or Jane) Porter, and left a posthumous son, James Green Jr., and a widow, who later married Rev. Robert (Robin) Kilgore , who built the historic Fort House in Scott County (VA), the scene of raids by Chief Benge and his Shawnee warriors."

"Robert Kilgore came to America some time prior to 1755, probably from Ireland. He was listed in the 1755 tax lists of Orange County, North Carolina. At that time this Robert Kilgore had two sons Robert and Charles.

Robert Kilgore Jr. married Winnie Clayton. He acquired 210 acres represented by deed from John Graves 20 April 1769. Later, he and his wife exchanged this land with Thomas Kilgore, relationship not known, for 280 acres. These transactions were dated 3 February 1770, although recorded at different times.

About 1772, Robert and Winnie with their children moved to what is now Scott County, Virginia and purchased 41 acres on the Clinch River. In 1773 his brother Charles came and purchased 286 acres. Although yet to be officially recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution, a record of Robert exists on " A muster roll of Capt. Joseph Martin's Co. stationed on the frontier of Washington County under the command of Col. Evan Shelby from May 1st to the 3rd of June 1777." Included on the roll is his brother, Charles Kilgore and Lewis Green, the father or brother of James mentioned below.

According to Judge G. W. Kilgore who was quoted in "Charles Kilgore of King's Mountain," five brothers fought in the battle: Charles, Hiram, Robert, William and James. Hiram was killed. Charles and Robert were wounded.

On December 31, 1782, Robert Kilgore, along with James Green and a man named McKinney were hunting along the Pound River in an area which is now Wise County, Virginia. They were attacked by Indians, and Robert and James Green were killed. In earlier histories it had been recorded that Robert's brother Charles was the one that was killed and that Charles was married to Winnie Clayton. Later historians proved this to be incorrect. R. M. Addington (History of Scott County, Virginia), went on to say: "McKinney made his escape and returned to the fort. A search party led by McKinney found the bodies of Kilgore and Green, and buried them in the hollow of a large chestnut tree on the north bank of Pound River, a short distance above the mouth of Indian Creek."

The children of Robert and Winnie included the following:

1 - Charles Kilgore, Jr. born 4 January 1764, Orange County, North Carolina, married Averilla Simpson. Charles served in the Revolutionary War from 1778 to 1782. He moved to Tennessee in 1787, then to South Carolina, and returned to Washington County, Virginia. He went on to Kentucky, and finally Indiana where he died 20 November 1844.

2 - Rev. Robert "Robin" Kilgore, born 1765, Orange County, North Carolina, married Jane Porter Green the widow of James Green. They remained in Scott County where he died 29 May 1854. A picture of his home is contained in Mr. Addington's book on Scott County.

3 - William Kilgore, born 1 June 1769, Orange County, North Carolina, married 1791 to Virginia Jane Osborne. He lived in Scott County, Virginia where he died 27 November 1853.

4 - Hiram Kilgore, born 1771, married Rebecca Renfro, died 1 April1851.

5 - Ralph Kilgore, born ca. 1773, married Nancy Gray.

6 - Esther Kilgore, married circa 1783 to Lewis Green, Jr., brother of the James Green who was killed by Indians.

7 - Stephen Kilgore, married Rebecca - note: It is not certain if he was their son.

Ralph Kilgore, son of Robert, married Nancy Gray, daughter of Walter. He first appeared on the Lower District personal property tax lists of Russell County, Virginia in 1791. Also listed were Robert and Stephen Kilgore. On 28 July 1795, per Deed Book 2, page 17, Ralph purchased 30 acres of land at the mouth of Stanton Creek from Caple Littleton. Recorded in Book 3, page 220, is the purchase of another 30 acres of land from Stephen & Rebekah Kilgore. On 7 March 1809, record was made of the purchase of 75 acres on Mocherson Ridge. The children of Ralph and Nancy, all born in Scott County, Virginia included the following:

John Kilgore, born 1799, married first in 1819 to Cynthia Addington and second to Isabella Roberts;

William Kilgore, born 1801, married 8 May 1831 to Mary Cody;

Ralph Kilgore, born 1804, married 26 February 1822 to Amelia "Millie" Wheatley;

Winnie Kilgore, born 1807, married 5 March 1830 to Rev. Silas Ratliffe;

Burdine Kilgore, born 1809;

Robert G. Kilgore., born 1812 married first, 1836 to Nancy Davis and second, 1839 to Nancy Green;

Martha Kilgore, born 1814, married, 1837 to William Francisco;

Elizabeth Kilgore, born 1816, married 8 December 1837 to Brooks Nickels.

Ralph "Rafe" Kilgore, Jr., son of Ralph, was married by his uncle Rev. Robert Kilgore to Amelia "Millie" Wheatley, believed to be the daughter of William Wheatley and Martha Sarah Osborne. Another source indicates her parents were James and Elizabeth Wheatley. Ralph settled at Big Laurel about 1830. The children of Ralph and Millie included the following:

Nancy Kilgore, married William Addington;

Elizabeth Kilgore, born 1827, Scott County, Virginia, married 14 December 1843 to Charles W. Addington;

Cenia Kilgore, born 1828, Scott County, Virginia, married William H. Gardner;

Nelson Kilgore, born 1830 or 1836, Scott County, Virginia, married Katherine Roberts;

Esther Kilgore, born 1833, Scott County, Virginia, married Gayle Roberts;

Mary Kilgore, born 1834, Scott County, Virginia;

Johnston Kilgore, born 1835/6, ScottCounty, Virginia, married 8 December 1853 to Susannah Day in Russell County, Virginia;

George Kilgore, born 10 October 1837, Scott County, Virginia, married Elizabeth Smythe, daughter of H. W. Smith. George died of consumption at the age of 31 years, 15 October 1868, Wise County,Virginia;

Polly (Mary) Kilgore, born 1840, Russell County, Virginia, married Isaac Wright;

Ira H. Kilgore, born 1843, Russell County, Virginia, married Jane Dean.

James Taylor Adams, a publisher, in 1935 owned the old home place of Ralph Kilgore, Jr.

Elizabeth Kilgore, daughter of Ralph, married 14 December 1843 to Charles Addington, son of William Addington and Sarah Stallard.

3E) KILGORE'S STATION: In 1782, N of Cumberland River, on S side of Red River; attacked by Indians, same year, and broken up. Probably in southern part of Logan Co; near state line, or may be in Tennessee.

Charles Barker found the folowing: When I was at Nashville ... checked in the TN Archives for Kilgore's Station. Several sources listed it as being the first settlement in Robertson Co.,TN. Thomas Kilgore came from NC in 1778, planted a crop of corn and lived in a cave until he harvested his crop in the fall. In the spring of 1779 he returned with his family and several others. Their settlement was very near the site of the cave where he had spent the previous summer. Thomas built a grist mill prior to 1790. Kilgore's Station was broken up for a one year period in 1783, when the Indian attacks on the settlements were at their fiercest. The group moved to the Bluffs (Nashville).

The following year they returned to Kilgore's Station, and from that time on was a landmark for travelers and settlers into the Cumberland area.

3F) - There is a history of the Easter/Esther name in the branch from which I descend. My Great great grandmother Easter Addington, born ca. 1855 was the Daughter of Charles Addington & Elizabeth Kilgore.

Elizabeth was born ca. 1827, and her sister, Esther born 1833 per 1850 Russell County Census. Were the daughters of Ralph Kilgore Jr. & Amelia Wheatley. Ralph the son ogf Ralph Sr. And Nancy Gray. Ralph Sr. named a daughter Winney and was therefore presumed to be a son of Robert & Winney

Now this is important. An article beginning on Page 227 of the Winter, 1983 edition of The Mountain Empire Genealogical Quarterly, was written by Emory Hamilton an eminent historian clears up the mix up that results in Robert being the one killed by Indians and being the one married to Winnie Clayton. On page 230 he lists her as being a "probable" daughter of Robert & Winnie.

Esther Kilgore married ca 1783 to Lewis Green Jr. Lewis Green Born May 5, 1751. Died in Harlan County Kentucky in 1835. He was a brother to the James Green who was killed by the indians and they were sons of Lewis Green Sr. (The descendants of Lewis and Esther Green claim that she was a daughter of Robert and Winney Clayton Kilgore.)

This may be as good as it gets. With no concrete evidence, try looking for the given name Winney in the early descendants of Lewis and Esther.

4) - I, too, am one of the orphan descendants of Easter. I keep watching for someone to come up with parents positive for her, but no luck!

I only have a couple of comments and questions about your list of children for Lewis and Easter.

Elisha was only married one time, to Nancy Bingham. He and Mary Brittain simply left Harlan Co. and moved to Mason County in the early 1830s.

Robert was married twice, first to Ely Ann Drake in 1825. In 1860 he filed for divorce because she had "abandoned and left him and now resided in the state of Tennessee". He then married Comfort Howard ca 1861.

Cheryl Meecha (It was from the 24 Mar 1963 Middlesboro News article)

5) - 25 Nov 1998 e-mail from rlwilder@jellico.com
