About Esther-Freida (Charna) Henson, הי״ד

Hansson, Esther Frieda; 68: Russian (Odessa)-born in 1861. Came to Eretz Yisrael at the age of seven with her parents and remained in Hebron.

She studied sewing and married Shochet (kosher butcher) Hansson. Her home was always open to the many Jews who visited the Tomb of Machpela and the graves of the Patriachs.

She was at the Reizmann family home when the killers came. Esther knew them by name and begged for her life. She reminded the murderers of all the help they had received from her. She was badly wounded anyway by sword and dagger stabs. She died six days later at the British hospital in Jerusalem.

Esther-Freida (Charna) Henson was born in 1862 in Odessa, Russia. At the age of 8, immigrated to Eretz Israel with her family and settled in Hebron.

She learned sewing, and at the age of 15, married and the couple had four children. She was a very active woman and was involved in public activities, and was famous for her kind hospitality. During the months of Elul and Tishrei, when Jews often came to Hebron to pray on the tombs of the patriarchs, the guests found a hostel in the her house.

On the day of the riots in Hebron, when Esther-Frida was staying at the son in law's house, rioters broke into the house, ignored her pleas, stabbed her and injured her badly.

She was transferred to the Government Hospital in Hebron, and two days later to the English Hospital in Jerusalem. On August 29, 1929, she died of her wounds there, and was laid to rest in the cemetery on Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
