Esther & her children were attended by slaves Darby and his wife, whom she had brought from Baltimore prior to her marriage, according to _Bio History of Westchester County_, p. 761. When the Tories burnt their house down, in July, 1779, the "faithful negroes" led Esther and baby Benjamin to a shelter in the woods and cared for them until they were rescued (loc. cit.).
