About Esther Annie Huth

Obituary for Esther Huth by Patricia McBride Doubell

Esther Annie Huth has left us after 101 years. She lived a long and full life always in the service of God and Jesus her saviour.

She was born Esther Peebles and had four younger siblings – Thelma, Joyce, David and Paul. They have all preceded her to heaven and she remained the eldest and the last to leave.

Esther was a precious aunt to Patricia, Jennifer, Jean, David, Val, John, Richard and Vanessa.

Esther was a secretary at the Salvation Army and she worked there until her retirement. During that time she married Hugo Huth and became stepmother to Connie, Lily and Vera.

There were many friends in her life, loyal to the end. Too many to mention but she loved you all. She never saw wrong in any person.

A great scholar and pianist, she became the organist for the Bertrams Methodist Church always playing for the church services, weddings and funerals. These were the days when it was necessary to have a young man to pump the organ.

One of her favourite outings was a day at the Johannesburg Zoo. She would be all dressed up with her hat, gloves and stockings – ready to walk that zoo with her nieces and nephews.

A picnic in Parys, on the Vaal River was high on her fun things to do.

Another passion was knitting. She knitted the most beautiful outfits, cardigans, jerseys and baby clothes. We all have a beautiful baby shawl to remember her by.

After her dear husband Hugo died, she lived at Salvation Army Retirement Home.

Then in her latter years, she has lived at Gerald Fitzpatrick. Esther loved the staff here, she would always say “Hello my darling” when any staff came into her room. We are all extremely grateful to the kind and loving care the staff showed Esther.

She was finally in a wheelchair, always recognising anyone who came to visit - ready to join in any hymn or chorus that people would sing with her.

So without a doubt we know that she is singing with all the angels in heaven, with all joy and in peace together with all her loved one………
