Esther Levey was born in 1812 to parent Godfrey Alexander Cohen and Frances Cohen (nee Jonas) Esther's Hebrew name at birth was Eliyakum Goetshlik HaCohen. However, Esther converted to Christian prior to her marriage to Joseph Moses Levey in 1830.

Esther and Joseph had 9 children together, Angelina, Emily, Edward, Matilda, Albert, Helen, Alan, Annie, and Florence.

Esther had 3 Siblings, Eliza, Anne, and her brother John Godfrey Cohen who settled in Australia in 1835.
