Eudette "Dettie" and her husband Willis/William Gillett ran the general store and post office in Lysander, Cayuga, NY for all their working years. For whatever reason they had no children but when Dettie's brother Frederick's wife died suddenly in 1897, they adopted Fred's infant son Lewis and raised him as their own, preserving his last name. The other child was adopted by another aunt and uncle. Brother Fred later remarried and had other children.
