About Eugene Joseph Karlin

Oakley -- Eugene J. "Gene" Karlin, 78, died Satuday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the Select Specialties Hospital, Topeka.

He was born July 17, 1922 at Catherine to Frank E. and Anna Mary (Schmidt) Karlin.

He was a 1941 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays, and attended Fort Hays State University. He served in the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II as first lieutenant.

He married Agnes M. Kohl on Aug. 8, 1953 at Ellis.

He was a farmer and rancher and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Oakley.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes, Hays; two sons, Mark of Aurora, Colo., Craig of Hays; four daughters, Karen Keith of Penokee, Mira Jo Hoke of Kent, Wash., Susan Lowman of Manhattan, Kan., Colette Ford of Fort Worth, Texas; three brothers, Fr. Paulinus Karlin of Hays, Frank of Las Vegas, Wilfric of Catherine; five sisters, Sr. Marcella Karlin of Fond du Lac, Wis., Isabelle Linenberger of Los Angeles, Teckla Werth, Sr. Lois Karlin both of Hays, Sr. Anne Karlin of New York; 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alvin, Benno, Marne and Cletus, and two sisters, Sister Mary Catherine Karlin and Sister Francis Anne Karlin.

Services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Paulinus Karlin and Father Mike Scully officiating; burial with military honors by the Hays VFW in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Hays Memorial Chapel, Hays [funeral service details omitted].

Memorial has been established with Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.
