"Mrs. Margolis Dies at Age 81

"Professor's Widow Was Civic Leader

"Mrs. Evelyn Aronson Margolis, civic, religious and education leader, died yesterday at her apartment in the Rittenhouse Plaza, 1901 Walnut st. She was 81.

"Mrs. Margolis was the widow of Max L. Margolis, former professor of Biblical philology at Dropsie College and a noted Biblical scholar. Last year she presented her husband's library to the college.

"She was honorary president of the Hebrew Sunday School Society and former president of the Philadelphia section of the Council of Jewish Women, and former vice president of the board of overseers of Gratz College.

"In 1941 Mrs. Margolis was head of the women's division of the Allied Jewish Appeal.

"Mrs. Margolis was a member of the board of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society-Council Migration Service, a refugee aid group, and of the board of the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Philadelphia.

"Surviving are a daughter, Miss Catherine A. Margolis; a son, Philip I, and three grandchildren.

"Services will be held at 1 P.M. tomorrow at Levine's, 7112 N. Broad st. Interment will be in Mt. Sinai Cemetery."

This is the high school scrapbook of Evelyn Kate Aronson. She was born in San Francisco on 21 January 1878.

She entered into the Girls' High School on 1 July 1892 at the age of 14 years and 5 months. Her family lived at 1314 Geary street. Her parents were Philip N. and Carrie Aronson, natives of Liverpool, England.

Evelyn graduated from the Girl's High School, San Francisco, in June 1895. She later attended University of California, Berkeley and graduated in 1900.

"It was during his stay in California, that [Max Leopold] Margolis met his future wife, Evelyn Kate Aronson, of San Francisco. They were married on June 20, 1906. Evelyn Aronson was a gifted, cultured woman who came from a prominent family. Among her descendants on her mother's side was Barry Goldwater. They had three children, Catherine, and the twins, Philip, and Max, Jr. Max, Jr. died of a stomach ailment during the family's visit to Palestine in 1924 where Margolis had come as the Annual Professor at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem. Margolis' grief was profound; after returning to the United States he was said to have visited his son's grave every Shabbat for the rest of life, even in intemperate weather." —Arthur Kiron

"Evelyn Aronson Margolis was a gracious, distinguished, and well-respected lady, very active in Jewish community affairs. She was confident and assertive, but never unkind. She served on various boards, such as the Overseers of Gratz College, and the Hebrew Sunday School Society that was founded by Rebecca Gratz. She was a native of California, the relict of Professor Max Margolis, a well-known scholar who wrote a standard book on Jewish history with Professor Alexander Marx of the Jewish Theological Seminary. ...Evelyn and Max had two children, Catherine and Philip. Catherine had a short-lived marriage when she was young [and] lived with her mother in their apartment on Rittenhouse Square in downtown Philadelphia. After her mother's death, she married a Philadelphia physician by the name of Rubenstone. She had no children of her own. Philip was an accountant. ...Philip had a son Philip Jr. ...Evelyn was a cousin of Senator Barry Goldwater, and she stayed in touch with him." —Alan D. Corré, 2005.
