He came from Free State, and scored three consecutive tries against Ireland on the 1912/13 tour of the British Isles.

I met him once or twice. A quiet fellow, reserved and one who always kept himself to himself - a private person. Although I never saw him play, I was told by his contemporaries that he was one of the fastest and most deceptive runners the game has produced.

And that is why, coming from what was the then relatively unknown Free State rugby nurseries, he became such a famous Springbok.

Evelyn Edgar McHardy, known throughout the 70 years of his life as 'Boetie', was born on 11 June 1890 in Bloemforitein.

He was an outstanding athlete at Grey College. Some of his track and field records stood for many years and while doing his matric in 1910, he won the Free State provincial championships over 100, 220 and 440 yards. A year later, he represented Free State at the South African athletics championships in Cape Town, and in that same year, he also made his rugby debut for the province. It is interesting to note that McHardy somehow found the time to play first-division hockey and that he also took part in soccer when he was a teenager. McHardy holds another distinction in that he was the first Free Stater ever to score a try against Western Province and it is also a little-known fact that he represented his province from 1911 until 1924!

In later years he served as a provincial coach and selector.

Hy dra die springbokkleure op die tweede oorsese toer teen Brittanje in 1912/13. Die destydse 22 jarige Vrystaatse vleuel het op die toer sy spore verdien. Die 3de toets (op 14 Desember 1912 te Cardiff teen Wallis) "was a triumph for Boet McHardy, whose defence saved the springboks on two occasions when it looked all over."!

"It was certainly Boet's game, for his defence was superb. . . . He had scored 20 in 1912."
