SKOFSTAD, Even - WI 15th Inf Co D. Born 4 Jun 1837 in Drammen, Norway, son of Johannes Evensen Skofstad and Bertha Olsdatter Kallerud. He came to America with his parents and two brothers, Ole and Albert, on “Emilie”, which sailed from Gothenburg, Sweden, and arrived in New York on 12 Aug 1840. They came to Muskego, Racine County, Wisconsin. He was married to Mary (1842-1915). Four children. He helped his uncle publish “Nordlyset”, the first Norwegian language newspaper in the United States. Civil War: Even and Christen Hatlestad set up a “sutler shop” at the front in March 1863. Post war: Buried at Muskego, stone reads “4 Jun 1837 – 3 Nov 1909”. He was an older brother of Albert Skofstad.
