“12. JOHN³ GILLETT (Joseph,² Jonathan¹), of Deerfield, Mass., and Lebanon ,Conn., born in Windsor, Conn., 10 June 1671, died in 1755 (Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, by Virkus, 1925, vol. 1, p. 342). He married in Lebanon, 3 Jan. 1699/1700, EXPERIENCE³ DEWEY, born in Westfield, Mass., 9 April 1682, daughter of Josiah² and Hepzibah (Lyman) Dewey.

“His remarkable experience in the last decade of the 17th century is of high interest to his descendants; and the European part of it was probably duplicated by few New England contemporaries.

“As Sheldon's Deerfield History (vol. I p. 254) states of the year 1696: 'From beginning to end this proved another troublesome year to the town. The Court also provided a garrison; and scouting was continued on the frontiers. Although this dangerous service was performed with boldness and fidelity, sudden inroads of the enemy could not always be averted. Like a whirlwind they came and went, leaving destruction in their track.'

“The detailed story of what happened that year to soldier John³ Gillett is told in the Stephen Williams manuscript, beginning: '7ber 16, 1696, John Smead & John Gillett being in the woods, looking or tracking Bees, were besett by a company of French Mohawks. J. G. was taken prisoner & J. S. escaped — the indians fearing a discovery by S. 16 of them hastened away toward the town, and three were left with J. G. It being lecture day the people were got out of ye meadows, that so ye might attend ye lecture, so that ye enemy came as far as Mr. Dan Beldings house that was within gun shot of ye fort. . . . [Mr.Belding, son Nathaniel, ae. 22, dau. Esther, 13, taken prisoners: wife, 2 sons, dau. killed: 1 son badly wounded: 2 daus. escaped. Other hostilities at fort, in meadow, etc.] . . . the enemy went up Green River & came to their companions that they had left wth Gillett. John Smead came into…'
