He married Mary Ann Szalai on July 27, 1983. She survives. He served in the U.S. Army during world War II and was a member of the American Legion in San Diego.

He was a member of the American Legion in San Diego. He lived in San Diego most of his life and owned a hardware store. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Schoen of Delta, Colo.; daughter, Shirley Wright of San Diego; sons, Jim Moran of Eckert, Colo., and Christopher Moran of San Diego; brother, Edward Schoen of Hungary; and four stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
