Faina Wengeroff was one of the very first women to enter medical school when St. Petersburg College (St. Petersburg, Russia) opened its doors to women in the 1870s. She and her husband, Leonid Ludwig Slonimsky, converted from Judaism to Eastern Orthodox Christianity to avoid discrimination.
