The beloved wife of Confederate Brigadier General Hiram Granbury. The Alabama native was introduced to the future southern General presumably in Waco, Texas and soon thereafter a joyful 1858 marriage between the two occurred. With the commencement of the American Civil War in 1861, Fannie, perhaps with a premonition, made the fateful decision to follow her husband off to war. A modern study of her life indicates that at the time of this decision, she was suffering from the effects of ovarian cancer, the ailment that ultimately takes her life. After the fall of Fort Donelson to Union General Ulysses Simpson Grant, now prisoner-of-war Hiram was moved to Massachusetts and confined in a federal prison in the Boston Harbor.
