About Farkas Wolf Salomon
Farkas Salomon was a happy-go-lucky fellow. He retired at the age of 45 when his business was almost bankrupt. He turned the business over to his two sons and told them that they should make their fortunes with it. It seems that he ran a bar and a general store in a small town called Also Szentmikaly. Well, Farkas liked a little mid-day schnapps and a short nap after lunch. So after lunch, he would clear off a section of the counter in the general store, lie down on the counter and take a nap. If there were any customers there, he would just tell them that he needed to take a nap for his health. If they wanted something, they could come back later.
Another story concerns the time that Farkas was at the synagogue praying during Yom Kippur. One of his buildings used for warehousing goods for the store caught fire, and the Christian neighbors ran to Farkas' house where they found one of his sons at home. They told the son about the fire and he asked them to help put it out while he ran to get his father at the synagogue. He ran into the synagogue and hurriedly approached Farkas, saying, “Father, our shed near the store is burning down.”
Farkas said, “Quiet, my son. I'm praying.”
“But Father, the shed will burn down. Don't you care ?” the boy asked. “I'm sorry,” Farkas said. “I can't leave now, we are in the middle of the service. I guess God needs the business more than I do.”
