About Father Pierre Biard, J.S.

(See French)

Father Pierre Biard was a Jesuit priest, missionary in New France (Acadia) (1567 - 1622). His parents were Jean Biard, royal notary and chatelain of Gières near Grenoble and Jeanne de Cluzel. He was admitted to the noviciate of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) on 3 June 1583. He was ordained priest in 1599. He taught theology and waited for an opportunity to go to New France. In 1611 he traveled to New France with Father Énemond Massé to be a missionary. Once in New France, he traveled along the coasts of New Brunswick and Maine to appease French quarrels and teach the indians about Christianity. In 1613-1614 he was taken prisoner by the English in Virginia. Father Biard traveled back to France in 1614. He returned to Lyon and served in disputes with Calvinists and as military chaplain.
