The Treaty of Windsor was a diplomatic alliance signed between Portugal and England on May 9, 1386, in Windsor and sealed by the marriage of King John I of Portugal (House of Aviz) to Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster. With the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota, assisted by English archers, John I was recognised as the undisputed King of Portugal, putting an end to the interregnum of the 1383–1385 Crisis. The Treaty of Windsor established a pact of mutual support between the countries.

This document is preserved at the Portuguese National Archives.

Historian Matthew Winslett says, "This treaty has been the cornerstone of both nations' relations with each other ever since."

Enduring to this day, the Treaty of Windsor holds the record as the longest-lasting diplomatic treaty in recorded history.

"Winston Churchill in a speech in the House of Commons in October 1943 famously described the unique and ancient friendship between England and Portugal as an alliance “without parallel in world history”.

It is 630 years since a treaty of alliance between King Richard II of England and King John I of Portugal was ratified at Windsor on the 9th May 1386 (The National Archives: E 30/310). Though it is not the earliest of the Anglo-Portuguese treaties that survive, the Treaty of Windsor is significant because it effectively cemented and strengthened ties between the two kingdoms and helped convert a fledgling alliance into a more permanent legacy of history.

The terms of the treaty included provisions for guaranteeing the mutual security of both nations and strengthening of commercial ties such as the right of both countries to trade on the terms enjoyed by the subjects of that country. There were even clauses encouraging freedom of movement and settlement between the two countries, as subjects of either country had the right to dwell in the domains of the other.

The seals attached to the document are those of the Portuguese ambassadors: Ferdinand Afonso de Albuquerque, Master of the Portuguese military order of St James and Chancellor of Portugal Lawrence John Fogaca entrusted as plenipotentiaries in the treaty negotiations."

"Mais do que uma aliança permanente, importava garantir o futuro político português como nação independente, pretendendo para isso renovar os acordos de amizade e apoio mútuo de 1373 entre Portugal e a Inglaterra.

D. Fernando de Albuquerque (mestre de Sant'Iago) e o chanceler Lourenço João Fogaça deslocaram-se então ao território inglês para negociar com Inglaterra um acordo de aliança política e militar, favorável a ambos. Ricardo II, rei da Inglaterra, impôs um salvo-conduto para que os dois emissários estabelecessem livremente contactos. O rei inglês, após as primeiras conversações, nomeou então três procuradores para a elaboração do texto final do tratado de amizade com Portugal. O tratado foi finalmente assinado a 9 de maio de 1386, tendo cinco procuradores testemunhado a assinatura do acordo entre o soberano e os delegados régios portugueses."
