About Finley Breeze Winterowd

Finley Breeze Winterowd was born 6 Jan 1878 in Montour, Tama, Iowa, the 10th child and last child of Hezekiah Cartwright Winterowd and Anna Thompson Winterowd. His ancestors came from Bannental, near Heidelburg, Germany. They came to the U.S. in 1730 and settled in Maryland. He came to Lemhi County in the early 1900s.

He filed on a small piece of land near the old Carmen Bridge and soon built a cabin, "large enough for two." On 20 September 1906, the Lemhi Herald reported "F. B. Winterowd has been fixing up his place near Carmen and will one day have a nice little ranch. He took up the place in the rough, has built a house and barn, fenced the premises, dug a fine well and cleared up a good sized tract. He will soon have 25 acres in cultivation, besides an apple orchard, he will have a large area in small fruit. He is a hard worker and attends strictly to business".

Finley married Lillie Juanita Clark on 8 October 1906. In October 1907 they had twins, Wadell Finley and Wanda Juanita. In April 1909 they again had twins, Emma Ann and Embert. Little Embert only lived four months. Hazel Clare was born at Carmen in January 1915. Shortly after, the Winterowds moved to a small ranch, The Buckhorn, on the North Fork of the Salmon River. Eugene Gordon was born there in 1916, Alta Irene in 1918, and Chester Raymond in 1920. Chester only lived about 4 years.

By all reports,"Chick" Winterowd was a sober, hard-working, and industrious man. He worked on the country roads around Boyle Creek and Carmen Creek. He hayed for Igou Brothers. He worked on the McKinney ranch and worked at the Tin Doy mine. He took in his mother-in-law and her three children for a while. He owned a wood saw and traveled around with his team and saw, cutting wood for others. The Winterowds lived at Boyle Creek for a while and on a small farm near the Red Butte.

He became ill with a pulmonary abcess and was bedfast for the last part of his life. He passed away 8 September 1935 at him home by the Red Butte and is buried in Salmon.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Feb 18 2021, 17:19:43 UTC
