Flathartach "na Troistain" or Flathartach "of the Pilgrim's Staff" acquired his nickname during or after his pilgrimage to Rome in 1030-31. He was Lord of Aileach and Tanist, or heir presumptive, to the throne of Ireland. However, he died, prior to ascending the throne, in 1036 "after a good life and penance." [1] He had three known sons, Aodh (who died in 1033), Domhnall (who died in 1027), and Muireadach (who died in 1039).
