Flandrina de Hauteville, countess of Paternò & Butera

Figlia secondogenita del Gran Conte Ruggero e della di lui prima moglie Giuditta d'Evreux, ricevette in dote dal padre le contee di Paternò e Butera[1].

Fu sposata in prime nozze al cavaliere normanno Ugo di Jersey del quale rimase vedova nel 1075 e dalla cui unione nacquero una figlia di nome Maria[2] e tre figli maschi: Manfredo, Giordano e Simone.

Nel 1089 si unì in seconde nozze all'aleramico Enrico del Vasto, a seguito dell'aiuto militare offerto da quest'ultimo al padre di lei. Dall'unione nacque un figlio, Simone.

Three of Enrico's sisters also came down to Sicily. Adelaide, the most famous, who married the great count Ruggero in 1087 (or 1089) and became countess of Sicily; while the other two sisters married Ruggero's illegitimate children, Giordano and Goffredo.

Ricordiamo che Enrico del Vasto, scese in Sicilia per aiutare il cognato Gran Conte Ruggero che gli offrì in moglie la figlia Flandina, Contessa di Paternò, che era vedova da parecchi anni del Conte Ugone di Circea dal quale aveva avuto una figlia di nome Maria. Sappiamo inoltre che all’epoca delle nozze tra Enrico e Flandina, Maria dei Conti di Paternò, era già una donna di almeno diciotto anni.

The monk Conrad´s Brevis Chronica records that in 1076 "Ugo de Guzzetta, capitaneus Cataniæ et gener comitis" was killed by the Saracens "in Mortelletto Cataniæ"[410].

12. FLANDRINA of Sicily (-[Apr 1137/Aug 1143]). Chalandon records that her parentage and marriage are confirmed by Pirro[455]. Her parentage is indicated by the Apr 1154 charter of her grandson “Manfredus comitis Simonis filius” which donated property to S. Maria di Mazzarino for the souls of “comitis Rogerii proavi mei...uxoris eius Adelasie...regine et...Henrici avi mei et eius coniugis comitisse Flandine”[456]. Enrico del Vasto confirmed privileges of Paternò Santa Maria di Josaphat, confirmed by “Flandina uxoris mea sive Rogerii atque Simonis necnon Manfredi atque Jordani filiorum meorum”, by charter dated 1124[457]. “Henricus magni regis Rogerii avunculus” summarised his donations to S. Bartolomeo di Lipari, for the souls of “meæ atque uxoris meæ Flandrinæ” by charter dated 1134, witnessed by “...Rogerius [maior filius Henri]ci comitis...”[458]. “Henricus...comes et marchio” donated property “...in territorio Paternionis...” to “presbitero Iohanni Malphetano...monacho”, for the souls of “domini...comitis Rogerii et domine Adalasie regine mee sororis” and “pro vita et homore domini nostris...regis Rogerii et pro anima mea et mee uxoris Flandine”, by charter dated Apr 1136 (O.S.)[459]. The Aug 1143 charter of her son Simone suggests that Flandrina was deceased at the time.
