"Lot 12 came to be Smith Farm when Charles Emery Smith bought the farm. Since Charles was born in 1867 and the Buzzell Family (the previous owners) had moved downstate by 1880, there must have been an intermittent owner.
Charles E. Smith married Flora Dodge of Perham. Flora was born in 1879 and was the daughter of Royal and Carolyn (Carrie) Wilson Dodge. Royal was a Civil War soldier who was with Sherman on his "March to the Sea." The war took a toll on Royal's health and he died in 1896.
Charles and Flora had five children:
- Eugene (1899)
- Lula (1903): Married Elmer Wood of Presque Isle.
- Benjamin (1906) Married Olive Richards of Washburn.
- Ada (1909)
- Carrie (1913)
Eugene, being the eldest son, inherited the farm and lived there his entire life. He married Gladys Oliver of Perham in 1917 and they had one son, Ralph, who was born in 1919. Ralph married Ruth Gould in 1937. Sadly, Gladys died soon after. In 1923, Gene then married the younger sister of Gladys--Blanche Oliver. They enjoyed 71 years of marriage together. They had one daughter, Pauline. Pauline's son lives in the old farmstead today. Pauline lives in Caribou with her husband.
Gene and Blanche enjoyed their farm life and were devoted to church work at the Dunntown Advent Christian Church. Gene loved to sing and even past his 90th birthday, would struggle up to the front of the church and belt out a song with all his heart.
Blanche had the most wonderful and warm smile. She was a joy to all she met and certainly to all who knew her.
Gene passed away on December 20, 1994 at the age of 95. Blanch passed away soon after. For all those who knew them, they will not be forgotten."
