Florence Goddard Soltau

FLORENCE GODDARD SOLTAU was the daughter of JOHN THOMAS SOLTAU, and his wife FLORENCE SOLTAU, daughter of ERVING CLARK of Efford Manor, Plympton near Plymouth (formerly Lady FLORENCE YOUNG). She was born at Ridgeway Lodge on 28 January 1861, and baptised on 6 March 1861 at Plympton St Mary by Reverend W J COPPARD. Her Godmothers were Lady YOUNG and MILLY CATHERINE SOLTAU, and her Godfather was GEORGE WILLIAM CULME SOLTAU-SYMONS.

FLORENCE married Captain LENNARD EDWARD DICK, RN. He was born at Paignton in Devon on 15 July 1851. LENNARD was the son of Captain JOHN GOODRICH DICK, RN and his wife HARRIET. JOHN was born on 22 November 1806 in London. On 7 December 1843 at St George’s Hanover Square in London he married HARRIET BAKER. JOHN was the son of Vice Admiral JOHN DICK, RN and his wife AUGUSTA. HARRIET was born in about 1812 at Tilmanstone in Kent, the daughter of Captain JOHN BAKER. RN. JOHN died at Totnes in Devon in 1871. HARRIET died there in 1881.

FLORENCE and LENNARD had issue: 1. LINA FLORENCE DICK, who was born at Plympton St Mary in 1890. 2. MURIEL AGNES DICK was born at Stoke Damerell in Devon in 1891. She died at Fir Trees, Ascot in Berkshire on 8 December 1945 aged 54, and was buried at Brookwood Cemetery. 3. CONSTANCE VIOLET DICK was born at Plympton St Mary in 1892. She died in 1954. In Westminster area, London 4. LIONEL JOHN L DICK was born in Plympton St Mary in 1894 , but died there in 1895, an infant. 5. DOROTHY FRANCES DICK who was born about 1897 at Ramsgate in Kent. She married HEREWARD REID SHARMAN in the Kensington area. HEREWARD was born on 15 February 1875 at Wellingborough, Northant. He died on 9 March 1933 at Empire Nursing Home, Vincent Square in London. DOROTHY settled in Southern Rhodesia. She arrived in Southampton from South Africa on 18 June 1954, declaring her intention to settle elsewhere in the British Commonwealth. They had issue: i. A daughter born about 1921. 5. EDWARD DICK who was born in Plympton St Mary in 1895, and died there the same year, an infant. He may not have been of this family.

In the 1911 census, FLORENCE declared that she had given birth to 5 living children of whom 4 were still living and 2 were deceased. Mathematics may not have been her strong point!

In the 1881 Census, Lieutenant LENNARD DICK RN was serving on HMS Agincourt, aged 29 and unmarried.

In the 1901 Census, FLORENCE and her daughter DOROTHY were staying with Mr and Mrs COCKS in Tavistock. The older girls, LINA, MURIEL and VIOLET were at a small boarding school in Paignton. In the 1911 census FLORENCE, aged 50, a widow, was living at 23 High Street, St George’s Hanover Square in London with her daughters DOROTHY, LENA and MURIEL.

LENNARD died on 19 May 1907. FLORENCE died on 3 June 1929.
