About Henry Vincent Calmady Soltau

HENRY VINCENT CALMADY SOLTAU was the son of JOHN THOMAS SOLTAU, and his wife FLORENCE SOLTAU, daughter of ERVING CLARK of Efford Manor, Plympton near Plymouth (formerly Lady FLORENCE YOUNG). He was born at St Mary’s Plympton on 18 August 1868, and baptised at Plympton Church on 13 September 1868 by Reverend W WATKINS. His Godmother was Miss FANNY PODE, and his Godfathers were Captain HENRY SCHANK HILLYAR, RN, and VINCENT P CALMADY.

On 1 June 1899 at St Judes Church, South Kensington, VINCENT married FRANCES MARGARET ELIZA (nee JESSOP). She was born on 12 April 1877 at St Leonards, Sussex.

FRANCES was the daughter of WILLIAM JESSOP of Thornsett, Bradfield Dale, near Sheffield, and his wife MARY COMPTON (nee BATEMAN), was born on 12 April 1877 at St Leonards, Sussex. WILLIAM JESSOP, her father, was a wealthy farmer, born in Sheffield on 18 October 1856 and he died on 4 July 1905. He was educated at Repton and at Jesus College, Cambridge. In the 1881 census, the JESSOP family had no less than 15 live-in house servants, FRANCES’ mother was MARY CROMPTON JESSOP, the daughter of THOMAS and SARAH BATEMAN. MARY CROMPTON JESSOP was born at Middleton by Youlgreave in Derbyshire in about 1855, and died at Ecclesall Bierlow in Yorkshire in 1895. Her father, THOMAS BATEMAN was born at Rowsley in Derbyshire in about 1821, and was recorded in the census as a landed proprietor, an author and antiquarian. His wife SARAH was born in about 1824 at Middleton by Youlgreave, Derbyshire. THOMAS BATEMAN’s parents were BENJAMIN BATEMAN and his wife HANNAH BATEMAN. BENJAMIN BATEMAN was a butcher, born at Youlgreave Matlock in Derbyshire in about 1795, and he died in 1870. His wife HANNAH was born in about 1794, and she died in 1875. WILLIAM JESSOP was the son of THOMAS JESSOP and his wife FRANCES YATES JESSOP. THOMAS JESSOP was born in about 1804 at Sheffield and was a steel manufacturer and Justice of the Peace. He died at Ecclesall Bierlow in 1887. His wife FRANCES was born in about 1817 at Liverpool in Lancashire, and died in about 1891 at Ecclesall Bierlow.

VINCENTand MARGARET had issue: 1. VINCENT WILLIAM SOLTAU, who was born at Crown Hill, Plymouth on 22 April 1903. 2. MARY FLORENCE SOLTAU, who was born at Scarborough in Yorkshire on 25 December 1900. She was baptised at Carlton-in-Lindrick, Nottinghamshire. She was educated at Eastbourne and Sunningdale. She married, as his second wife, DAVID HEATON. She subsequently divorced him, and he married, thirdly, Mrs OLIVE GOSSAGE.

VINCENT was educated at Cheltenham College. In the 1901 Census 18 months after his marriage, he was on his own, with a couple of servants, at Cator Court, Ashburton, aged 32, a farmer (employer). He studied for a time to be a Land Agent, but after his marriage he became a brewer, trading as “JOHNSON & BREWER, Brewers of Tavistock, Devon”.

In the 1911 census, HENRY & FRANCES and the two children were living at 21 Leigham Street, Plymouth. He was described as a gentleman of private means, and no profession was mentioned,

At the time of making his Will on 27 September 1900, he described himself as of Cator Court, Ashburton, Devon. He died on 28 November 1927. He bequeathed everything to his wife FRANCES MARGARET ELIZA SOLTAU. The Will was witnessed by his father, JOHN T SOLTAU of Little Efford, Plymouth, and his sister CONSTANCE MARY BEWES, wife of ANSTIS G BEWES, Heatherleigh, Tavistock, Devon. Letters of Administration with Will annexed were granted to his widow at the Principal Probate Registry on 23 March 1928. Gross Estate £3,113 8s 1d, Estate Duty £60 10s 10d.
