When Florence "Flora" Zillah Benson was born on July 28, 1815, in Mount Holly, Vermont, her father, Jesse Holford, was 34, and her mother, Olive Wheeler, was 27. There were at least eight Benson children born to the couple: Laura, Alanson, Maria, Flora Holford, Lyman, Susannah, Addison and Anderson.

Flora married William Carroll Holford on March 8, 1838, in Springville, Pennsylvania. They had eight children in 18 years: William Henry Holford (1839-1925), Hannibal Henry Holford (1840-1904), Lyman David Holford (1843-1923), Castello Newton Holford (1845-1905), Addison J Holford (1849-1905), George Holford (1852-1868), Mary Jane Holford (1855-1944), and Emma T Holford (1857-1964).

Flora died on March 20, 1875, in Beetown, Wisconsin, at the age of 59.
