About Florence Sophia van Bart
Obituary supplied by Lynn Brooke, a descendant.
(Taken from the Seventh Day Adventist Review and Herald, Kenilworth, Cape, RSA: 1 September 1946) Van Bart-Florence Sophia Rubidge was born at "Gletwyn", Grahamstown, C.P. on October 1, 1857. On her 21st birthday she was married to Edward Van Bart, a lawyer and attorney. Through the efforts of Sister Smith, of Lang Laagte, Sister Van Bart learned of the Adventist message and accepted it in 1899. She was baptized by Elder Edmed and joined the Johannesburg church. They had no church building at that time, and the company met in the Van Bart home. At the age of 80, Grannie Van Bart came to live with her youngest son, Fred Van Bart, at Lansdowne, where she has been a loyal and faithful member of the Lansdowne church, much loved by all who knew her. She took great pleasure in having a part in helping to build the Lansdowne church building. In spite of failing health our sister remained cheerful and full of courage and faith. It was always an inspiration to talk with her and see how her heart was full of praise and thanksgiving to her Maker. She looked forward with great anticipation to the quarterly occasions when Communion was brought to her in her house. The power of her beautiful character will be felt in each of the lives of those who knew her. The memory of her unselfish deeds and thoughtful kindness to others will be a precious treasure to all. Grannie's health failed quite noticeably during the last year and she grew weaker and weaker. On Friday evening, August 16, 1946, she peacefully went to her rest at the age of 88 years. There are left to mourn 3 sons, Egbert, John and Fred; and 2 daughters, Sophia and Violet, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will greatly miss their loved one. Services were conducted at the Lansdowne church and at the graveside by Elder Milton Robison, assisted by Brethren C.S. Pike and C. Britz. MILTON ROBISON
