François Girouard dit La Varenne came from France with his wife Jeanne Aucoin, according to two depositions, one made by his great-grandson Pierre Richard (Doc. inéd., Vol. II, p. 191), and another made by Louis Courtin, husband of his great-great-granddaughter Marie-Josèphe Martin (ibid., Vol. III, p. 27). Both of these depositions erroneously call the Girouard ancestor Jacques, instead of François, probably because the deponents presumed that he had borne the same first name as his elder son, to whom they were both connected. François is the name that one finds, however, in three Acadian censuses and in his younger son’s marriage record in the register of Beaubassin.
Per Stephen White, Fracois arrived in Acadia about the year 1640. He was a Ploughman and Laboreur.

Francois died between the 1686 and 1693 Acadian census. No exact date of death is recorded for him (per Stephen A. White)

Girouard Coat of Arms

The Girouard Coat of Arms is described as:
Red background with three pennants, two in gold and one in silver or "Gules, three pennants, two in chief or and one in argent". The red symbolizes the planet Mars and denotes military fortitude.

The family Coat of Arms is the Family Shield. The term comes from the fact the design used to be embroidered on a tunic, hence 'Coat', this design was usually given to a knight once he became entitledto bear Arms. The design could then also be used as a uniform for the servants of the household. When the knight went to war the design was not only worn on the tunic but was also put on the shield, as it was the largest piece of equipment the knight had and as the shield was easily seen it made sense to have the design put upon it so people could see who was who at a distance on the battlefield.

The family Crest was a design that was placed upon the Helmet. The early type of crest was a plume of horsehair (like the Roman soldiers) which helped deflect any sword blow coming down on the head and to distinguish the leaders from the common soldier. The Girouard Crest is the Flure de Le.

The Mantling or Lambrequin was a cloth covering, usually in the two main colors of the Arms, that covered the Helmet. It protected the wearer from heat and perhaps prevented the Helmet from rust. It also afforded an additional protection from sword attacks by deadening the blow and possibly entangling the weapon. Due to this the Mantling is usually depicted in a cut or ragged form. The Wreath was made from twisted cloths of the same colours as the Mantling. It was used to cover the place where the Crest was fixed to the Helmet. As you can see Red and Gold are the colors of the Girouard Family.

Francois Girouard dit La Varanne, born in c1621, was a young laborer and farmer from La Chaussée, near Blois, in the Orleanais region of the Loire valley in France, when he came to Acadia in c1640 with his wife Jeanne Aucoin. She was from La Rochelle. They had five children, including two sons, both born at Port-Royal, who married and created families of their own:
Older son Jacques dit Jacob, born in c1648, married Marguerite, daughter of Francois Gautreaux, at Port-Royal in c1670. They had 14 children, including nine sons who married into the Le Borgne de Bélisle, Comeaux, Doiron, Petitpas, Amireau dit Tourangeau, Bourgeois, Guilbeau, Blanchard, Bernard dit Renochet, Barrilleaux, Bastarache, Pitre, and Doucet families. Jacques dit Jacob died at Port-Royal in October 1703 in his mid-50s.
Younger son Germain, born in c1656, moved to Chignecto in the late 1670s to join the pioneers of that settlement, which included his older sister Marie-Madeleine, wife of Thomas Cormier. (A personal note: the Cormiers of North America are descended from Thomas Cormier, who married Marie-Madeleine, third child and second daughter of Francois Girouard dit La Varanne, at Port-Royal in c1668. Genealogically, then, all Acadian Cormiers are Girouards, too.) Germain married Marie, daughter of Jacques Bourgeois, founder of the Chignecto settlement, and widow of Pierre Cyr, at Chignecto in June 1680. They had three children, including a son, Germain, fils, who married into the Barrilleaux family. Germain, père died at Chignecto in the early 1690s, only in his 30s.
Meanwhile, Francois dit La Varanne died at Port-Royal in the early 1690s in his early 70s. His wife never remarried and died at Port-Royal in April 1718 in her late 80s. ...
