Epitaph: Lost On Lake George By The Burning Of The Steamer, John Jay, July 29, 1856, age 38.
Troy Daily Times. Friday Afternoon, August 1, 1856
"The Albany Evening Journal states on the authority of a gentleman who left Caldwell Thursday morning, that fifteen or sixteen persons are supposed to have been lost by the burning of the John Jay, but that no more bodies had been found. The only one named as missing is Mrs. Frances Mary Sherman, wife of A. B. Jones, of Manchester, Conn., and daughter of Josiah Sherman of Albany. The Captain and crew were all saved. The vessel was insured for about $15,000."
