PRINCE FRANZ ALEXANDER DUKE OF TECK

Franz Paul Karl Ludwig Alexander Herzog von Teck was born on 27 August 1837 at Vienna, AustriaG.2 He was the son of Alexander Paul Ludwig Constantine Herzog von Württemberg and Countess Claudine Rhédey von Kis-Rhéde. He married Mary Adelaide Wilhelmina Elizabeth Hanover, Princess of Cambridge, daughter of Adolphus Frederick Hanover, 1st Duke of Cambridge and Auguste Wilhelmine Luise Prinzessin von Hessen-Kassel, on 12 June 1866 at Kew Palace, Kew, London, EnglandG.3 He died on 21 January 1900 at age 62 at White Lodge, Richmond Park, Richmond, London, EnglandG.2

    He was created Franz 1st Fürst von Teck (styled as HH 1st Prince of Teck) in 1863.4 He gained the title of Herzog von Teck (styled as HH 1st Duke of Teck) on 16 December 1871.4 He gained the title of Prinz von Württemberg (styled as HRH Prince of Wurttemberg) on 11 July 1887.1 He gained the title of Graf von Hohenstein.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)5 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.)5

Elizabetin se pradjed Franz od Trecka rodio u Osijeku

Franz od Tecka, sin austrijskog časnika, vojvode Alexandera od Württemberga, i transilvanske grofice Claudine Rhedey, rođen je 1837. godine u Osijeku. S obzirom na to da je brak smatran morganatskim, tj. bračni partneri nisu bili jednakog društvenog statusa, Franz nije mogao naslijediti očevu titulu. Stoga mu je prvo dodijeljena titula grofa od Hohensteina, a kasnije mu je car Franjo Josip dao višu titulu, princa od Tecka.

Kao produkt morganatske zajednice, odnosno kao sin "obične" grofice, nije mogao računati na to da će sklopiti neki društveno i materijalno isplativ brak, kao što je pošlo za rukom nizu njegovih rođaka iz osiromašenih njemačkih vladarskih obitelji. Besprijekoran "pedigre" ženika bio je najvažniji faktor pri sklapanju brakova u vladajućim dinastijama 19. stoljeća, a u tome su Franzu prepreku za ulazak na neki od europskih dvorova predstavljali njegovi "obični" barunski i grofovski, uglavnom mađarski, ali i hrvatski, preci. Stoga se školovao za časnika u austrijskoj vojsci te sudjelovao u bitki kod Solferina i kasnije u austrijsko-pruskom ratu.

No, posrećilo mu se zato što tadašnja britanska kraljica Victoria nije dijelila takav strog i isključiv stav glavnine visokog plemstva. Položaj na čelu najuglednije i najbogatije europske dinastije dopuštao joj je pravo na izdvojeno pa i neuobičajeno mišljenje o takvim pitanjima. Britanska kraljica već je bila uvidjela do kojih problema, pogotovu zdravstvenih, dovode česti rođački brakovi, pa je odlučila malo ublažiti kruta pravila, upravo s ciljem da u obitelj unese svježu krv. Za takvu odluku, osim načelnih, imala je i neke privatne razloge: njezina omiljena prijateljica i sestrična, princeza Mary Adelaide, bila je već u tridesetim godinama, a zbog svog izgleda poznata pod nadimkom Debela Mary, pa ni njezine šanse za udaju na neki strani dvor nisu bile osobito velike. Franz možda nije imao novac ni besprijekorno podrijetlo, ali je imao kakvu-takvu prinčevsku titulu te je, po Victorijinu mišljenju, dobro izgledao.

Tako se Franz od Tecka svojim brakom s princezom Mary 1866. godine izbavio od dosadne sudbine bezličnog austrijskog oficira i završio na britanskom dvoru. U početku nije izgledalo ni da će u Britaniji njegova sudbina biti značajno drugačija od karijere u Austriji i da će ostati zaboravljen kao sporedni i pridruženi član britanske kraljevske obitelji, zajedno sa svojom neuglednom suprugom. No, kraljica Victoria, koja je taj brak i aranžirala, imala je i dalje potrebu usmjeravati sudbinu te obitelji, i to u njenom najboljem interesu. Zaključila je da je njihova kći Mary izvrstan izbor za suprugu njezina unuka i budućeg britanskog kralja, vojvode od Clarencea. Kad je on, nakon što su već objavljene zaruke, u dobi od samo 28 godina iznenada umro od gripe, Victoria je jednostavno odlučila da se Mary treba udati za njegova mlađeg brata, vojvodu od Yorka. Unatoč pomalo neobičnom i ugovorenom početku, bio je to sretan i uspješan brak. Mary i njezin suprug, kao kralj George V., od 1910. do 1936. vladali su Velikom Britanijom. Imali su šestero djece, među kojima i Edwarda VIII., koji je abdicirao zbog Wallis Simpson, te Georgea VI., oca današnje kraljice Elizabete. (Goran Mladineo)
