Francis Andrews (also spelled Andros, Andrus, and Androus), of Hartford and Fairfield, is thought to possibly be a brother of William of Hartford and John of Farmington. It is worth noting that Francis' son John and Williams' son Thomas married sisters (daughters of John Kirby of Middletown). Also, Francis' sons Thomas and Abraham married another pair of sisters (daughters of Robert Porter of Farmington).

Barbour in Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut, states that Francis married Anna Smith daughter of John.[1] Schenck in the History of Fairfield names his wife as Anne daughter of Giles Smith.[2] Jacobus was of the opinion that Francis' widow, Anne, married a Mr. Smith after his decease, not that Smith was her maiden name.[3]

Notes

He settled in Hartford, 1639; removed to Fairfield.
May have been brother of William of Hartford and John of Farmington. It is at least worthy of note that John (son of Francis) and Thomas (son of William) married sisters, daughters of John Kirby of Middletown; while Thomas (son of Francis) and Abraham (also a son of Francis) also married sisters, daughters of Robert Porter of Farmington. Will 6 Jun 1662 proved 5 Mar 1662/3; wife Anna; sons John, Thomas, Jeremiah, Abraham; daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Hester, Rebecca, Ruth; John Cramton and my daughter Hannah; granddaughter Hannah Cramton

There are two immigrant ancestors which bear this surname. First is considered the John Andrews of Farmington, Connecticut, then is traced the Line of Francis Andrews of Hartford and Fairfield, Connecticut. It has been suggested that John Andrews was from County Essex, England and that he was a brother of Francis Andrews. These points have yet to be proven. Francis had sons who married daughters of Robert Porter of Farmington, Connecticut. Francis Andrews/Andrus/Andros, wife Ann(e) Smith daughter of John Smith. In Bronson's, The History of Waterbury, Connecticut (Waterbury: Bronson Brothers, 1858), p. 131, he calls Abraham Andruss, Sen., the son of "Thomas [sic] who had removed from Hartford to Bankside, in Fairfield, had four sons - John, Abraham, Jeremiah and Thomas & 6 daus., will dated 1661." These are, of course, the children of Francis Andrus/etc. of Fairfield, Conn. Information was correctly printed in the History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut, from the First Indian Deed in 1659 to 1854 by Wm. Colburn(?)(Waterbury: Bronson Bros., 1854) under "Additions to Family Records" (p. AP161): Abraham Andrus Sr.. was s[on] of Francis of Hartford and Fairfield who d. 1661. The information about the wife of Francis Andrews: Ann (?second) wife of Francis has been called the daughter of Giles SMITH (Virkus III, p. 607), but "Johanna Smith daughter of Gylles Smith was bp. March the twenty five one thousand six hundreth and forty and nyne" (NEH&G Register XII, 196, "Original Distribution of the Town of Hartford, Among the Settlers, 1639") making her too young to be the wife of Francis. In Torrey (pp. 17, 682) Anne/Anna (_____) ANDREWS m. second, ca. 1664, Henry SMITH who d. 1687, his widow dying 1690. There is also evidence she was the daughter of John SMITH; perhaps it is of no consequence; at least, until it is determined whether or not she was the mother of the children of Francis ANDREWS. In Savage (I, pp. 56-57) is indicated that Francis was at Hartford from 1639-1647/48 and that his name is on the Founder's Monument there; in 1648 or after he moved to Fairfield where he d. between 6 June 1662 (date of will) and 5 Mar. 1663 (date of probate). He was an early member of First Church, Hartford as his two oldest sons were bp. there. In his will he provides for four sons and five daughters: John, Thomas, Jeremiah and Abraham, Elizabeth Mary, Esther and Ruth besides Hannah who had m. John CRAMPTON, after of Norwalk, Conn. Francis purchased, before 1640, the north part of Richard BUTLER's lot, on the corner of the present Elm and Trinity Street, Hartford. Children (from the above references, including his will): A-"John Andrewes sunn of Frances Andrewes, bap. Sept. 27, 1646"(Hartford Town Records) d. 1683, at Fairfield 1670; m. and had two children living when he d. B-"Thomas Andrewes sunn of Frances Andrewes bp. Jan. 2, 1647/48" (IITR) d. 1700 (Savage) or 1718 (Torrey); probably the Thomas ANDREWS of Hartford, freeman 1667; at Milford, Connecticut, 1675-1700. From NEII&G Register XI, p.__: "Records of Farmington - Hannah & Mary Andrews, twin dau. of Thomas Andrews of Melford, son-in-law to Robert Porter, bp. here by writes of communion of church May 31, 1685". C-Jeremiah ANDREWS, probably the Jeremiah of Bedford, N. Y., 1697; if so his (second?) wife which he m. 8 Sept. 1697 was Hannah (GOLD) AMBLER. D-Abraham ANDREWS of Waterbury, Connecticut, m. Sarah Porter (not to be confused with Abraham o_f Farmington [son of John who married Rebecca Carrington] who also moved to Waterbury) E-(Elizabeth) Mary ANDREWS. One Mary d. 1691, daughter of Francis, m. Simon COOLEY who d. 1688 at Fairfield (Virkus III, p. 607). One Mary d. 1671 m. Simon COUCH d. 1688 (?the same). F-Esther/Hester ANDREWS. G-Rebecca ANDREWS m. 7 July 1678 (as his second wife) Samuel BENEDICT of Norwalk and Danbury, Connecticut. H-Ruth ANDREWS. I- Hannah ANDREWS who m. John CRAMPTON, later of Norwalk. [1, 5]

Francis Andrews of Hartford and Fairfield and John Andrews of Farmington may have been younger half-brothers of William Andrews.[3]

Our ancestor was JOHN CRAMPTON, was born in 1640 in Norwalk, and died in 1683 in the same village. He married HANNAH ANDREWS (born in 1641 in Fairfield, died 08 Oct 1697 in Norwalk). She was the daughter of FRANCIS ANDREWS or ANDRUS (1623-1663) and ANNA SMITH (1625-1662). Francis' name is on the Founder's Monument in the Ancient Burying Ground at Hartford. In his will, Francis bequeathed to "John Crampton, husband of daughter Hannah," (undetermined) rods of lands in his homestead lot, next his house, "provided he fence it all around with a five-rail fence."

Biography

Birth

Francis' birth is an estimate. He was born between say 1610 and 1623. Based on an estimated marriage about 1640 and ownership of land in 1640, he would have been at least 21 so born before 1619.

Marriage

Francis married Anne or Anna, surname unknown, about 1639 or 1643 probably in Hartford, Connecticut. [4] We know that son Thomas was baptized in 1646 and that daughter Hannah married in 1662, implying her birth about 1642. Anne is called Anna Smith in the probate records,[5] leading to many genealogists giving her a maiden name of Smith.[6] However, probate documents seldom, if ever, mention a wife's maiden name. It is much more likely that she married again shortly after her husband's death. Remarriage was the norm especially when there were underage children.

Hartford

Francis Andrews, spelled Andros, Androus, lived in Hartford as early as 1635,[7][8] but definitely by 1639.[9] As one of the founders of Hartford, his name is on the Founders' Monument.[3][1]

Hartford in 1640 prepared from the original records drawn by William S. Porter. Image by The Connecticut Historical Society Francis owned several parcels of land in Hartford.

1 acre 1 rood, bought of Richard Butler. When Francis sold it to Richard Fellows it had a house, outhouses, yard, garden etc.[10] The lot was on the corner of Elm and Trinity Streets.[1] This is lot #118 on the left side of the old map. 3 acres 2 roods and 29 rod of meadow in Hockanum bought of James Ensign (acknowledged 28 Jan 1663), which he sold to William Hill.[11] 4 acres two roods meadow (in the fourty acres) bought of Nathaniel Ward, and sold to James Ensign.[12] 3 acres upland (in the fourty acres). Sold to John Willcock.[13] 2 acres 1 rood 30 parches meadow in Hockanum purchased from Mr. William Androwes. Five acres in Hockanum were sold to Thomas Bull.[14] Bankside Farmers Fairfield

Bankside Farmers Francis removed to Fairfield about 1648, and became one of the Bankside farmers, where his home lot of ten acres lay west of Daniel Frost's.[2] He remained in Fairfield until his death in 1663.

Fairfield, Connecticut, was settled after the Pequot Wars. The area was called Unquowa by the Native Americans. After some of the area's farmers found that their cattle had wandered to the west along old Indian trails, a group of five farmers decided to settle in that remote area called Machamux (The Beautiful Land) by the Native Americans. They became known as The Bankside Farmers and were officially sanctioned by the town of Fairfield to inhabit this land. Today, this area is called Green's Farms and is part of Westport, Connecticut.[15]

Death Francis made a will 6 January 1662. It was proved 5 March 1662/3. [5][2][3] So he must have passed sometime between these two dates. He was probably buried in the "Old Burying Ground" in Fairfield, Connecticut. [16]

Will Francis made his will 6 January 1662. It was proved 5 March 1662/3. [3][1][2]

To "son Thomas 5 acres of land at Bankside and a piece of land in his home lot to set a house upon; a gun barrel and stock."[2] "To son John, 3 acres of the lower end of his home lot and a piece of land 4 rods wide with a house upon it, provided he allowed his mother the use of another as good, 3 acres of meadow called the heather-bite and a gun."[2] "To son Jeremiah, a rapier and a staff, and 20s."[2] Abraham received 20s.[2] Daughters Mary, Hester, Rebecca and Ruth 10 s. each when 18 years of age.[2] "To John Crampton, husband of daughter Hannah, 3 roods of lands in his homelot next his house, provided he fence it all around with a five-rail fence."[2] "To granddaughter Hannah Cramton, 10 s.," [2] "To his wife Anna, house, land and remainder of his estate."[2] Children CHILDREN named in the 1662 will of Francis.[5] HANNAH, m. (1) Peter Norton and (2) Hugh Griffin.[3] 2HESTER/Esther.[3][1] REBECCA.[3][1] Rebecca Andrews was the daughter of Francis Andrews[17][3] Thomas Andrews of Fairfield, Connecticut, was identified as the father of Rebecca Andrews Benedict, the second wife of Samuel Benedict, according to the Benedict Genealogy.[18]. The father of Rebecca Andrews Benedict was formerly identified as Thomas Andrews, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Andrews of Ipswich (Massachusetts), but according to Anderson's Great Migration Thomas Andrews of Ipswich died unmarried on July 10, 1683 in Ipswich,[19] so he was not Rebecca's father.
