About Francis Bearden
Very early spelling of this surname was "Burdin" - per researcher Mitch at paxpooh@aol.com. Mitch states: "Francis was born circa 1689 in Caroline Co, VA. He married Sarah Blasingame in 1715 in VA and he died 1744 in James City. VA." I have not researched this myself (cball@twc.com).

Francis Bearden was the constable in Caroline County, Virginia according to the Virginia Order Book. On page 337 of this book it states:9 April1736-Francis Bearding is appointed constable of the precinct in which Charles Walden is at present constable."
Other information about Francis comes from Find-A-Grave online. (I have not researched this family myself): "Francis was the son of Jacob and the husband of Sarah Jane Blassingame. They were married c. 1716 or 1717. They had several children, including, but not limited to:Ambrose, Benjamin Franklin, Sarah, John William Sr., Richard, Humphry, Thomas Sr., Edmund. He may have been a constable or judge, but he is most remembered for tobacco theft!
In the book, "Caroline County Virginia" is the following record: "An attempt to get rich quick also led Francis Bearding (Bearden) to crime. To secure capital with which to speculate he broke into the storehouses of Benjamin Hubbard of lower Drysdale Parish and carried away 350 pounds of tobacco. The Caroline magistrates had jurisdiction to try Bearding since neither the value of the goods he stole, nor the break-in and entry during daylight were sufficient to constitute a felony. But they preferred not to exercise this right and sent him to Williamsburg to stand trial for his life in the General Court, because in colonial Virginia the theft of tobacco, which was the basis of the economy, was treated very much like horse-stealing, at a later date, in the American West. Hanging was none too good for a thief." It is unknown (to me at least) whether he was actually hung. Later records are about charitable support for his wife and children. His family moved on, the name "Bearding" becoming "Bearden." Burial: Body lost or destroyed

After Francis was hung, the Church took in the kids. Sarah (This being the Va. colony and subject to King George) could not work thus the church took the kids into they're custody. Francis was a constable and deacon of the church an highly favored in the colony so they couldn't bring themselves to do the deed. so they sent him to Williamsburg, VA to be hung. One other thing. Their last name was Bearding, John William changed it to Bearden after the hanging of his father. Rev. Dalton Barden" - dalton_bearden62355@yahoo.com
