Biography
Francis Cogdell was born on 3 Nov 1744 in Beaufort, Carteret County, Province of North Carolina. [1] He was the son of George Cogdell and Margaret (Bell) Cogdell. He is named in his father's will which was probated in 1761 in Wayne County in the Province of North Carolina. He was also named in his mother's will which was written on 11 Jul 1772. She leaves him nothing as he had already been provided for in his father's will. [2] [3] He married Cecelia (Boone) Cogdell. [4] [5]

Francis was granted land in Dobbs, Johnston and Wayne Counties in North Carolina between 1765 and 1785. The borders of these counties were fluid during this period. [6] On 25 Oct 1765, a grant for 200 acres of land was entered in Dobbs County In Francis Cogdell's name. There is no issue date and no location for this tract. [7] On 5 May 1769, he is granted 240 acres of land in Dobbs County on the north side of the Neuse river below Mockason Swamp. It is unclear whether the 200 acres entered on 25 Oct 1765 with on issue date is part of this grant. [8] On 28 Apr 1768, he is granted an additional 135 acres in Dobbs County on the North side of Little River. [9] On 14 Mar 1775, he is granted land in both Dobbs and Johnston counties, 169 acres on the West side of Beaverdam Swamp in Dobbs; [10] and 300 acres on the North side of the Neuse River in Johnston. [11] On 28 Feb 1780, a grant for 100 acres of land in Buck Swamp in Dobbs County is entered. There is no issue date, and there is a note indicating that this grant may go with file 1658. [12] On 30 Sep 1785, he is granted 300 acres of land beginning at a Black Oak in Wayne County. [13]

According to North Carolina Early Censuses and Tax Lists, Francis was living in Dobbs County in 1769, [14] Duplin County in 1786 [15] and Wayne County in 1786 [16] and 1788. [17] In the 1786 Duplin census, he is living in Capt. Bowden's District. In the household, there is one white male 21 to 60 years old, 1 other white male, and 8 white females. [18]

Francis passed away before 14 July 1788 when Celah Cogdell, his widow and the administrator of his estate, is ordered to bring 4 pounds, 4 shillings and nine pence specie by the second Monday of October to the Court in Wayne County to cover the costs incurred in a court case brought against the estate of her husband which she lost. [19]

Elizabeth Britt filed a petition for a US Revolutionary War pension on Oct 29 1853 through her lawyer, George Ames. On that same day, Josiah and James Odom declare that their father, Jethro, spoke about Francis serving in the Revolutionary War. According to Josiah, his father told him that he was in a battle with Francis Cogdell at Moore's Creek. When Francis lost his hat in battle, he substituted one of the enemy's for his own. Josiah and James both swear that they have never heard anyone in the community voice doubt that Francis served in the war. On 19 Apr 1854, Elizabeth gives her declaration, swearing that she is 73 years of age and the only surviving child of "Francis Cogdell, deceased, and his wife whose maiden name was Celia Boone." She also states that her father passed away in 1834 and her mother in 1841. She had no specific memories of the service he performed, only that she remembers her parents speaking about it. It appears that the application was rejected with no explanation. [20]
