Biographical Summary

"Second son of Alexander Garden of Troup, by Jane, daughter of Sir Francis Grant, Lord Cullen, was born at Edinburgh 24th June 1721. He was admitted advocate 14th July 1744, constituted Sheriff Depute of Kincardineshire in 1748, nominated one of the Assessors for the city of Edinburgh, 22d August 1759, and appointed conjunct Solicitor General with James Montgomery (afterwards Lord Chief Baron) 30th April 1760. He succeeded George Sinclair of Woodhall, taking his seat on the bench as Lord Gardenstoune, on the 3d July 1764; and on the resignation of James Ferguson of Pitfour in 1776, also became a Lord of Justiciary...

...He succeeded to the estate of Troup, on the death of his elder brother in 1785, and being in a declining state of health, went over to the Continent the following year, where he remained nearly two years; and some time after published an account of his travels; entitled Travelling Memorandums &c. He seldom appeared on the bench after that period, and died at Morningside, near Edinburgh, 22d July 1793."
