About Francis Gregg, IV
Francis Gregg was born in Putney in 1734, at his grandmother's home. When he was 25 he became Clerk to the Skinners' Company of which his father was Master. He moved to Mitcham when he was engaged to be the adviser and confidant of Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisile (1748-1825) which led him to associate with the aristocracy during the long reign of George 3r. Francis and his wife Elizabeth Welford made their fine city house at Skinners' Hall into a centre of London fashion, the resort of many of the wits and famous personages of the time. He was a most handsome man and the most elegant manners. Lord Carlisle, Lord Ashburton, George Rose, George Selwyn and others of the same stamp were his constant guests. MP for Morpeth 1789-1794.
